Who is CB?

As a former teacher and SENCO, I have always been deeply committed to supporting the most vulnerable students. Several years ago, I aimed to inspire my students as an English teacher, encouraging them to create compelling stories and excel in their GCSEs. However, upon becoming qualified, it became evident that this outcome was not feasible for many in my classes due to various challenges.

Teaching is not a 'one size fits all' job, and I swiftly adapted my approach to ensure all students could access and benefit from my lessons.

I invested considerable time in reading SEND-related literature, attending seminars outside school hours to enhance my understanding of learning disabilities, and undertaking courses to deepen my expertise in meeting SEND needs. Within months of starting as an English teacher, I discovered my true passion lay in supporting children and young people with SEND, prompting a significant shift in my career focus.

My career path has included roles as an English teacher, SENCO, SEND consultant, and Senior officer in a number of local authority EHCP services. Through regular interactions with parents, carers, and teachers, I've observed their common concern: the desire for greater knowledge in supporting their children with special needs.

Reflecting on my initial teacher training, where SEND was briefly covered, I realised it was insufficient preparation for the realities of teaching. With the increasing number of children with SEND, it is crucial that future teachers feel equipped and confident from the outset of their careers. Without SEND being a mandatory module in every teacher preparation programme, the challenges will only intensify.

I firmly believe that for all teachers to effectively support SEND students, they must possess the necessary knowledge and understanding.
